The Brief
The clients required a large, level and functional outdoor space that took advantage of the fantastic views over Merewether Beach and the city of Newcastle with direct access from a rumpus room. Also on the wish list was a swim-spa and a built-in fire pit with surrounding seating. Shading was required for the Summer months with sunlight access in Winter.
Design Solution
A large 80m² deck.
The steep site required close work with engineers during the design process to also accommodate the large and very heavy swim-spa that sat approximately 3 meters above ground level on a concrete block and slab plinth. The swim-spa looks amazing finishing flush with the decking. The site is also in a bushfire zone resulting in the deck structural components constructed with galvanised steel. The decking boards are bushfire resistant timber and all balustrades metal or glass.
The shade sails are positioned to shade in Summer and allow sun in during Winter.
The vertical aluminium slat screens on either side of the deck are angled to maximise views for the clients while creating privacy from the neighbours.
A sunken tiled area houses the outdoor fire pit with stepped decking surrounding to create seating. There is even a built-in firewood box that forms part of the seating.
The result is a well-designed, functional level space that's great for relaxing or entertaining.
