Childcare Centre – Thoughtfully Designed for Learning and Play
The Brief
Bolster Building Design was engaged to create a new childcare centre tailored to a uniquely long and narrow site. The brief called for functional and engaging spaces for toddlers, preschoolers, and babies, with a strong emphasis on natural light, outdoor play, and compliance with all relevant planning and childcare regulations.
Our Solution
The design responds directly to the site’s shape and slope, positioning play areas for toddlers and preschoolers at either end of the building, while a central, north-facing balcony provides a dedicated outdoor space for babies. Highlight windows are strategically placed to draw in winter sun while minimising summer heat, ensuring a comfortable and energy-efficient learning environment year-round. The internal layout balances supervision, accessibility, and the diverse needs of each age group.
The Challenges
Designing within the constraints of the NSW Childcare Planning Guidelines, local council requirements, and a challenging long, narrow sloping site required innovative spatial planning and careful coordination. Bolster Building Design worked to ensure that the design meets all regulatory standards while creating a welcoming, light-filled, and safe space for children to grow, learn, and play. The project is currently in the planning stage, moving towards delivering a high-quality early learning facility for the community.
